<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Hip hop dance entered popular culture when I was around the age my sons are now.\u00a0 Following disco, it was new and hard to define – except that it was totally different from what I’d seen before.\u00a0 Doubtless, in the big American cities, it was much better understood.\u00a0 I saw it on a few videos, which themselves were “new”.<\/p>\n
I never received any dance training as a kid; I played piano instead.\u00a0 When my eleven year old son joined hip-hop last fall, we didn’t know if he’d commit to it.\u00a0 True, he did dance at home, sometimes for hours.<\/p>\n
Well, at first, his interest seemed lukewarm.\u00a0\u00a0 A couple of times I went along; my younger son, my wife and I would relax in a room with plush couches and colourful walls while my older son had his dance class.\u00a0 We could hear them working out the routine, but couldn’t see; their studio was a few doors down the hallway.<\/p>\n
I loved hanging out in the lounge.\u00a0 Dancers would come and go, paying us no attention; they’d practice their routines or talk about school and such.<\/p>\n
Paul’s interest vibrated between “a little less” and “a little more” until sometime in the spring.\u00a0 Eventually I was able to go along more often.\u00a0 As the nights got warmer and\u00a0 brighter, he’d come out for water, panting and sweating.\u00a0 Sometimes his teacher would talk to us.\u00a0 Paul, it seemed, was finding his rhythm.<\/p>\n
Around a month ago, Paul tried out for next year’s competitive team (this year was recreational) and made it.\u00a0 Away we go.<\/p>\n
To all the dancers\u00a0 in the year-end performance:\u00a0 thank you for the amazing show.\u00a0 Your professionalism was truly impressive.<\/p>\n
