{"id":335,"date":"2013-10-30T19:46:36","date_gmt":"2013-10-30T19:46:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/facebooklet.ca\/blog2\/?p=335"},"modified":"2018-06-14T21:07:30","modified_gmt":"2018-06-14T21:07:30","slug":"a-drawing-from-james","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/facebooklet.ca\/blog2\/a-drawing-from-james\/","title":{"rendered":"A drawing from James"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>My younger son started drawing last summer.<\/h1>\n<p>I used to think that all kids draw.\u00a0 My younger son, however, never seemed to want to.\u00a0 Last summer I asked him why; he told me that he was never happy with his drawings.\u00a0 He lacked faith he could produce anything he would like.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m no great artist, but I would say I&#8217;m pretty good.\u00a0 Moreover, I&#8217;m self-taught (starting about three and a half years ago) and not very talented.\u00a0 A person who lacks talent, yet learned on their own, is usually well-suited to explain a skill to others.<\/p>\n<p>Like people usually do, James was making the mistake of outlining the subject first.\u00a0 Experience has taught me that&#8217;s exactly what <em>not<\/em> to do.\u00a0 People don&#8217;t recognize faces by the outline, but rather by the features.\u00a0 &#8220;Focus on what&#8217;s light and what&#8217;s dark,&#8221; I told him, &#8220;and what draws your eye when <em>you<\/em> look at it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>James immediately started drawing with a whole new attitude.\u00a0 I thought he did pretty well.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll show you that drawing some other time; today I&#8217;m showing you a more recent one that he really wanted me to put &#8220;on the computer.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>By the way:\u00a0 James has his own computer at school, and probably rivals my competence at some day-to-day uses.\u00a0 Of course, he has a Mac.<\/p>\n<p>Well, James, here&#8217;s Santa&#8217;s Buddy, for all to see:)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/..\/jamessb.png\"\/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>My younger son started drawing last summer.
